This project challenged me to make a chess set that was unlike the rest. One that gave the player enough information to play effectively and have a better user experience during the process. I wanted my pieces to stand out from the rest.
What's the problem?
Most chess sets look the same. All are wood, black and white, and the same shape.
Exploration
I did a lot of experiments to find out how I wanted my final pieces to look. I tried out many different shapes and sizes of my chess pieces. This included the top and the base.
Creating
After making many different prototypes of what the base will be, I decided on the final shapes of the pieces, and I started the process of making the final pieces. First bending the copper, then chemically reacting the copper to have a patina, and lastly filling my mold with epoxy to create the bases.
In Conclusion
The chess project wasn't just about making a set that looked different. It had me experiment with materials, human interaction studies, and efficient manufacturing techniques. These elements pushed me to create a better designed chess set for everyone.
